This term I am taking a class on how to make a canoe paddle. It's been so fun, although last time I had little cuts in my thumbs from wood shavings. I decided to make my paddle out of black walnut, which is a pretty hard wood. This means that it will be very unlikely to break while paddling, but it's a little heavy. Mostly, I picked walnut because I thought it was incredibly beautiful. Here are the latest pictures. Basically, I'm at the point where I'm shaping the paddle blade which means using a spoke shave to round out the blade.
This picture shows the progress I've made on rounding out the blade, which is not that much.
